The answer is almost certainly not what most people think, traffic is only part of the story
For years, EV charging site selection followed a simple formula.
- Find a busy road.
- Find available power.
- Install chargers.
Unfortunately, the real world doesn’t work like that.
We’ve all seen charging hubs sitting beside major roads with disappointing utilisation, while seemingly less obvious locations quietly outperform expectations every day.
That’s because drivers don’t charge based on traffic volumes. They charge based on behaviour.
Understanding that behaviour is becoming one of the biggest competitive advantages in the industry.
The Best EV Charging Sites Tell a Bigger Story
Every location leaves a digital footprint. Traffic counts tell us how many vehicles pass a site, but that’s only one piece of the picture.
What they don’t tell us is:
- Whether those drivers own EVs
- Whether they can charge at home
- Whether they’re making a long journey
- Whether they’ll stop for twenty minutes
- Whether there’s already too much charging supply nearby
- Whether the site is easy to access and leave
Looking at traffic alone is like valuing a retail unit by counting pedestrians without knowing whether any of them ever go shopping.

The charging experience is increasingly becoming a destination experience rather than a refuelling stop.

Every charging hub represents a long-term infrastructure investment.
A poor decision today can impact revenue for the next twenty years.
That’s why investors are increasingly asking different questions.
Not: “Can this site be built?”
But: “Can this site consistently deliver utilisation, revenue, and long-term returns?”
They’re very different conversations.
